How We Pick Products
Last updated: 9 October 2026
Small Space Done publishes buying guides for people in studios, small apartments and dorms. Every guide follows the same rules, so you know what a recommendation on this site does and does not mean.
The rules every pick has to pass
- Renter-safe first. We favour products that need no drilling, or that leave only holes a lease normally allows. When a pick needs screws, we say so.
- It has to fit a small room. We give typical dimensions and tell you what to measure (doorways, shelf depth, rod height, under-bed clearance) before you buy.
- Realistic budgets. Prices are typical US ranges at the time of writing. They change often, so always check the current price.
- Product types over hype. We usually recommend a type of product (for example an expandable under-sink shelf) rather than one brand, and we name a specific brand only when we are confident it exists and fits the brief.
- No invented numbers. We never make up ratings, review counts, test results or statistics.
What we do not do
We do not run a test lab, and we do not claim to have used every product in a guide. Our guides are research-based: product specifications, dimensions and common renter constraints. Brands do not pay for placement and do not review articles before publication.
How the guides are made
Articles are drafted with the help of AI writing tools and checked against the rules above before publishing. Photos on the site are illustrative room scenes, not photos of the specific products linked. Guides are updated when picks, prices or advice change; the date at the top of each guide shows the last update.
